Fertility and IVF

Couples can benefit from Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at all stages of the fertility process

Health and Well-Being Before Conception
Acupuncture can assist and improve the chances of conception, by preparing the body for the journey ahead. It is important that both partners are in good health at the time of conception to give the best possible start to the new life. Many women will receive Acupuncture to improve their health and general qi and blood circulation before conceiving.

Regulating the Menstrual Cycle
If there are irregularities in the menstrual cycle Acupuncture will aim to improve the quality and regularity of the cycle, namely
• Amenorrhea
• Irregular cycles
• Premenstrual signs and symptoms
• Heavy Periods
• Long or short cycles
• Painful periods with clots

Female related Fertility Issues
Many women will present to the clinic with a western gynaecological diagnosis. Some women may also be taking fertility drugs such as Clomid or Metformin. The good news is that Acupuncture can be used in conjunction with western interventions. Conditions treated include
• PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)
• Endometriosis
• Unexplained Infertility

IVF, IUI and Donor Egg
German researchers have found Acupuncture increased conception rates in IVF by almost 50% (Fertility & Sterility, April 2002 issue). The ideal time to start receiving Acupuncture before any ART is three months, this is to start preparing and building up the body’s immune system, it also takes three months for eggs and sperm to mature.  This is the preparation time in order to get couples to the best health wise in all aspects in order to increase the chances of a successful outcome, not just to conceive but to have a healthy, full term pregnancy.

When the assisted cycle begins Acupuncture aims to negate any side effects caused by drug treatments, in fact it works with the hormonal ebbs and flows to increase its effects i.e blood circulation to the uterus, the thickness of the endometrium. Two Acupuncture treatments are given on the day of Embryo transfer, one before and one after transfer. Studies have shown this particular treatment to substantially increase chances of implantation. Marianne work with couples attending all the major clinics in Ireland the UK and abroad, she has previously worked with SimsIVF giving on-site pre and post embryo transfer treatments.   Sims IVF
